Dermatology is a subject with a large visual component, and all practitioners of the speciality at any level benefit from seeing patients and photographs, even for conditions with which they are familiar. However, pure atlas formats may prove frustrating to the reader who wants a complete package, in order to understand, investigate and treat their patient. Our aim has been to produce a comprehensive and copiously illustrated book which fulfils the function of a dermatology atlas with high quality pictures, but also has sufficiently detailed supporting text to make it a useful reference source for any dermatologist, trainee, or generalist in primary or secondary care. The emphasis is on clinical rather than investigative dermatology, and the text favours disease descriptions, differential diagnosis, investigations and treatment rather than extensive discussion of pathogenetic mechanisms. Each chapter provides a comprehensive account of the subject area, but extensive cross-referencing is used to avoid duplication of topics which might otherwise appear in several chapters. As in most areas of medicine, the rapid pace of advances and the exponential rise in bibliography conspire to make large projects dated before publication, but all material in this book was researched and written within 12 to 24 months prior to publication; extensive referencing would not be appropriate for the style of the publication, but for each chapter we have provided details of selected reviews and textbooks for further reading.
